Ravi Shastri

That he began by batting at No. 11 and ended up opening the innings tells you pretty much all you need to know about Ravi Shastri. In the history of the game there are few players who have maximised ability and talent as fully as the Mumbai allrounder. A thinking, wily left-arm spinner and a batsman who placed the highest possible premium on his wicket, Shastri played 80 Test matches for India and is among an elite group of players who managed ten centuries and 100 wickets in the longest form of the game.
An astute reader of the game, Shastri was a valuable deputy to any captain he served under. Tall, handsome and opinionated, Shastri was the poster-boy for Indian cricket through much of his career despite detractors constantly suggesting that he batted too slowly for the team's good.
It was a mark of Shastri's grit and determination that he averaged a massive 77.75 against the Australians, and no-one will forget the unbeaten 206 he made in Sydney in Shane Warne's debut Test.
After giving up the game when only 30 Shastri embarked on a career in the media that has gone from strength to strength. An instant hit because of his tendency to be absolutely forthright when asked for an opinion, Shastri has, over time, become India' most dependable commentator. When the need has arisen Shastri has stepped in to serve Indian cricket in various roles including cricket manager and director of the National Cricket Academy. He currently represents India in the ICC's cricket committee.
